Burj Al Arab - Dubai's 7-Star Hotel
The luxury hotel Burj al Arab is the most luxurious hotel in the world and is also known as a 7-star hotel. Officially, though, it has only been awarded five stars. More stars are not possible according to the international classification of hotels. However, the hotel is far more luxurious than 5 stars require - which is why it is often referred to as a 7-star hotel.
With its total height of 321 meters, it is also one of the tallest hotel buildings in the world. The location off Dubai's coast and the unmistakable shape, which resembles a sail, make the hotel a real highlight. It is located on an artificial island about 280 m away from the coast and can be reached from the mainland via a curved bridge. The hotel is operated by the Jumeirah Group, which also manages the Jumeirah Beach Hotel and the Emirates Tower.
Construction & Origin of the Burj al Arab
The name Burj al Arab means "Tower of the Arabs". The luxury hotel was built between 1994 and 1999, of which the first two years were spent making the artificial island resilient enough to support the construction. The hotel was designed by Tom Wright, an employee of Atkins Middle East, according to the client's wishes. The owner, Sheikh Muhammad bin Raschid Al Maktum, had the hotel of superlatives cost an estimated 1.5 billion US dollars. The sail-like architecture is intended to recall, among other things, Dubai's past as a maritime trading center. The initial plan was to build the hotel directly on the coast, but due to the shadow the hotel would cast on the beach, it was decided to build it on an artificial island. In order to keep the hotel as stable as possible, the supporting poles of the building go down as much as 45 meters under the sea bed.
A total of 70,000 cubic meters of concrete, more than 40,000 square meters of glass, 9,000 tons of steel, 13,000 cubic meters of Carrara marble, 12,000 cubic meters of Brazilian granite, a good 30,000 cubic meters of Italian mosaic and 8,000 square meters of gold leaf were processed for the actual building.
