Welcome to Burj Khalifa - Dubai's Highest Attraction

Reaching an astounding height of 828 m, the Burj Khalifa proudly claims the title of the world's tallest building. Yet, this remarkable skyscraper doesn't stop there; it also boasts the highest usable floor, the most floors, and the fastest elevator globally. The construction of the Burj Khalifa spanned about 7 years, culminating in its grand opening on January 4, 2010. This monumental project incurred a total cost of around 1 billion euros. Prior to its inauguration, the tower bore the name 'Burj Dubai,' but it underwent a renaming ceremony to 'Burj Khalifa' in honor of Sheikh Khalifa bin Zayid Al Nahyan, the President of the United Arab Emirates. This renaming was a gesture of gratitude for his substantial financial support, which aided in the completion of Dubai's ambitious 'debt tower.'

The Burj Khalifa is located in the center of Dubai Downtown. The Downtown district was created especially for the gigantic tower. Architect Adrian Smith designed this gigantic skyscraper. The project company Emaar Properties took on this enormous construction project.

Among Giants

The Burj Khalifa still enjoys its status as the tallest building in the world and thus joins an illustrious circle. The highest buildings in the world are masterpieces of engineering and pioneers when it comes to design and architecture. Previous owners of the title were Taipei 101 in Taiwan, Petronas Towers in Malaysia, and Willis Tower in the USA. In 2020, however, the tower in the heart of the United Arab Emirates may lose its title to a competitor because by then the Jeddah Tower in Saudi Arabia, whose planned height is 1007 meters, will be completed. In addition, the Dubai Creek Tower is to be completed by 2020. We will see whether the Jeddah Tower or the Creek Tower in Dubai will be the tallest building in the world.

Planning & Construction of the Burj Khalifa

Initially, the skyscraper was planned to surpass the then-tallest building, Taipei 101, by only a modest margin, standing at 508 meters. However, driven by both technological possibilities and an appetite for innovation, the tower's height continued to escalate. Arranged on a Y-shaped ground plan and converging in a central axis, three building columns make up the structure of Burj Khalifa. The construction required approximately 330,000 cubic meters of concrete, 39,000 tons of reinforcing steel, and 142,000 square meters of glass. Executing this monumental undertaking demanded about 22 million team working hours to bring the vision of the world's tallest building to life.

Use & Equipment of the World's Tallest Building

Comprising a total of 189 floors, this remarkable skyscraper dominates the Dubai skyline. Of these, 163 are used for offices, hotels, and more. The highest floor is 638 meters high. It can be reached by elevator at a speed of about 60 km/h. The elevator is equipped with a safety belt. Moreover, the building has 57 elevators, 2 double elevators, and 8 escalators. Besides the Burj Khalifa has a floor area of 517,240 square meters, of which approximately 517,000 square meters are usable.

The Armani Hotel is located on the first floor of the skyscraper. It was designed by star designer Giorgio Armani. Above are some chic offices and luxury suites. The Restaurant At.Mosphere is located on the 122nd floor. Thus it is one of the highest restaurants in the world. Moreover, a lobby is located on the 123rd floor.

The 124th floor hosts a 360-degree observation deck, reaching a height of 453 m, making it one of the world's highest platforms. From this vantage point, visitors can revel in a breathtaking panoramic view of the Arab Emirates and Dubai City. Since February 2019, the world's highest lounge, known as 'The Lounge, Burj Khalifa,' has occupied the 152nd to 154th floors. Extending onto an outdoor terrace on the 152nd floor, the lounge offers a unique experience. Additionally, several floors of the Burj Khalifa are dedicated to a fitness and wellness area, along with spacious apartment accommodations.
