Dubai is the capital of the Emirate of Dubai in the middle of the United Arab Emirates. A city between desert and sea, day and night, luxury and wealth, it’s a metropolis with many faces.

Today more than two million inhabitants live in the largest city of the United Arab Emirates. The cityscape is characterized by skyscrapers, Arab tradition, and international chic as well as expensive hotels and yachts in the ports of the city. However, this big city on the Persian Gulf can look back on an extensive history.

Dubai’s Growth into a World Metropolis

Many centuries ago Dubai was already one of the most important trade routes of the region. The trade relations gradually developed into important economic factors for the city. Last but not least, pearl fishing brought her the prosperity she embodies today. Through the discovery of oil and the associated good position of the sheikhs in Arabia, Dubai was able to set a self-initiated trend towards modernization and luxury in recent years that make it stand out from many competing metropolises in the world.

It is not only its long history and its vision for the future that make the city a popular tourist destination for over 17 million tourists annually (2017) – and the trend is rising (20 million in 2020). Its roots in oriental tradition and the flair of a modern cosmopolitan city give Dubai its own lifestyle. In addition, the region’s climate has contributed to the enormous growth of the locality. In addition to a bright blue sky, water temperatures of around 19 to 35 degrees Celsius promise a relaxing holiday in Dubai.

Dubai – the Second Largest Emirate

With a total area of 4,114 km², Dubai is the second largest city state in the United Arab Emirates (UAE). The other six emirates are Abu Dhabi, Ras Al Khaimah, Ajman, Um Al Quwain, Sharjah, and Fujairah. However, most of the area consists of uninhabited desert land, such as the Rub-al-Khali desert in the east. It is also called the “Empty Quarter” of Dubai.

Population of Dubai

Anyone who has ever visited Dubai will have noticed the uneven gender distribution in Dubai. Only 25% of the inhabitants are women. This is mainly due to the many male guest workers who had to leave their families behind and came to Dubai to work. The guest workers make up the majority of Dubai’s population and come from over 60 different countries – so it’s no wonder that Dubai is very multicultural.

Religion in Dubai

The majority of Dubai’s population is Muslim. They believe in the God Allah and live according to the rules of the Koran. They neither drink alcohol nor eat pork. During the month of fasting, Ramadan, people only eat and drink after sunset. In addition, the Koran prescribes praying five times a day. At these fixed times, the call of the muezzin is heard throughout the city.
